According to the records released by the
Nanggroe Acheh Darussalam Police, aside from the
12 civilians killed on New Years night by a bomb
in Peureulak, East Acheh, there have been 470
civilian deaths as a result of the conflict
since the coming into force of the Military
Emergency on 19 May 2003.All of the
aforementioned victims were civilians, not GAM
personnel.
76 TNI and police personnel are said to have
been killed, specifically 50 soldiers and 26
police officers, all shot by GAM.
580 GAM soldiers are said to have been killed,
while 290 GAM soldiers are being held as
prisoners. 30 of these prisoners surrendered
themselves during Operation Tegak Rencong (Hold
the Dagger firmly) I from mid-May to November
2003, and 99 surrendered during Operation Tegak
Rencong II between 19 November and 31 December
2003.
During the Military Emergency there have been
232 exchanges of fire, 247 murders, 175
shootings, 144 arsons and 83 kidnappings.
Command posts have been assaulted 36 times, 26
explosions have taken place, 25 vehicles have
been burnt and 27 identity cards have been
seized.
1220 criminal cases involving 1250 accused have
been investigated to a conclusion by the police
and referred to the public prosecutor.Of this
number, 1025 cases involving 1064 accused have
reached the end of examination and
cross-examination, while 546 cases have reached
a verdict.
301 weapons of various types, 17225 cartidges,
43 grenades or bombs, 83 communications devices,
130 two-wheeled motor vehicles and 16
four-wheeled motor vehicles have been seized.
GAMs strength is now 2452 personnel with 2678
firearms.
The National Human Rights Commission has
recorded that during the first stage of the
military operation 319 civilians lost their
lives, 117 people were wounded and 108 went
missing.Tens of thousands of people have been
displaced from their homes, and around 600
schools and homes have been burnt.Based on this
data, Human Rights commission member Zoemrotin
K. Soesilo has stated that the Commission is
opposed to the extension of the Military
Emergency.For the Commission, such a policy [of
extension] will do more harm than good.
The number of civilian victims continues to
rise.The Human Righst Commission records that
the number of civilian deaths now stands at 319
people, with 140 wounded, 151 missing and 600
schools and homes burnt.Victims from the GAM
side, including those killed, wounded or
missing, number more than 900, while 66 TNI
soldiers have died. |
