The
Ladia Galaska is road project to link the remote Gayo
Highlands to the east and west of Aceh. The project is
highly controversial as it cuts across the 2.6 million
hectare Leuser Ecosystem, which encompasses the UNESCO
declared World Heritage Site of the Gunung Leuser
National Park.
The plans include 450 km of main road, and more than
1200 km of minor roads. In a country where illegal logging has been
recognized by the government as a serious and ongoing problem, there
are fears that the road will open this unique ecosystem to further
exploitation. Around one quarter of the forests in the ecosystem are
already degraded, further endangering wildlife such as the Sumatran
orangutan, the Sumatran rhino, the Asian elephant, the Sumatran
tiger and others. |
