Merumek
(Anak Turun Mandi)
The Merumek (Anak Turun Mandi) is a unique ceremony.
On the seventh day of Turun Mandi ceremony, the dukun
pray for the safety and well being of the baby. To
disclose the sex of the new born baby, they put a
plate of yellow glutinous rice (ketan kuning) with a
roasted cock on top in the family room. Before a name
is given, the baby is bathed with flowered water. Then
the baby will carried around with four self defence
art troupe and a man endowed with magic power while
dancing and playing the rebana, wishing to free the
baby from disturbing alien spirits. Then the Tepung
Tawar followed. The baby's hair is cut and the cut
hair put in a green coconut shell called kerambi puluh
while chanting The Salawat Nabi SAW and Marhaban
songs. The ceremony is ended with prayers and also
dances and regional songs. |
