   UNITED KINGDOM - MEDIA RELEASE AND STATEMENTS
UK Government Response to Tsunami in Indonesia

February 3, 2005

UK Government Pledges:

• £75m for relief and recovery in the tsunami-affected region. (£48.5 m has been committed to date). Further funds will be committed against clearly defined needs.

Support to UN for Core Co-ordination activities:

• Provision of vehicles, equipment and airlift, for International Humanitarian Partnership’s (IHP) UN base camp in Banda Aceh. This is a joint DFID-Finland-Sweden-Norway-Denmark operation. Arrived and operational in Banda Aceh.

• Provision of vehicles, equipment, water purification tablets and airlift for OCHA ‘Humanitarian Information Centre’ (HIC). Operational in Banda Aceh.

• Procurement and delivery of 15 Land Rovers to OCHA, and office equipment to OCHA Meulaboh. Arrived Medan: 24/01/05

Support to UN/Government of Indonesia ( GOI) for relief operations:

Personnel and in-kind donations from DFID

• Purchase and delivery of 10 Emergency Health Kits for World Health Organisation (WHO). To provide basic medical supplies for 100,000 people for 3 months. Arrived Banda Aceh 05/01/05

• Provision of 3,750 family tents for UN Development Programme ( UNDP). Arrived in Medan 24/01/05. 1,000 forwarded to Meulaboh.

• Ongoing procurement of 20,000 body bags, consigned to TNI.

• Provision of 5 Land Rovers to UNSECOORD. Arrived Jakarta 14/01/05.

• Transportation of fuel bladders, pumps and pre-fabricated warehousing from WFP stockpile in Brindisi to WFP Banda Aceh using UK military assets.

• Deployment of 3 x Super Puma helicopters to Banda Aceh, for tasking by WFP/UNHAS. Arrived and operational.

• Deployment of 2 x Mi-8 helicopters from Moldova to Medan. In Medan. Awaiting onward tasking by WFP/UNHAS.

• Funding to OCHA/UNJLC for 2 local GIS specialists to work in Vice President’s Disaster Management Centre, Jakarta.

• Secondment of technical personnel to UNDP ( shelter advisor), WFP (air-co-ordinator) and OCHA ( information management specialist)

• Procurement of 200m of bailey-type bridging for WFP/UNJLC underway.

Military assets & personnel

• Deployment of 7 person OLRT team to Medan/ Jakarta. ETD Indonesia: 11/02/05

• Deployment of 1 MOD assessment officer to Jakarta/ Medan/ Banda Aceh. ETD Indonesia: 04/02/05

• Deployment of 4 person CIMIC team to Banda Aceh. ETD Indonesia: 08/02/05.

• Deployment of 4 person Mobile Air Movements team ( MAMS) to Banda Aceh. ETD Indonesia: 05/02/05

• Deployment of 24 person team from 7 Flight Army Air Corps & 2 Huey helicopters to Banda Aceh. ETD Indonesia: 07/02/05

• Supply of tactical fuel handling equipment to WFP/UNHAS, for Meulaboh. Arrived Medan: 24/01/05. Onward transfer to Meulaboh in progress.

• Deployment of HMS Scott, Royal Navy’s deep ocean hydrographic survey ship to survey earthquake epicentre.

• (Secondment of 2 OLRT logistical planners to UNJLC ended).

Funding to UN, International Committee of the Red Cross ( ICRC)/ International Federation of Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies ( IFRC) & NGOs:

UN

• £3m:WHO’s regional appeal.

• £4m: UNICEF’s regional appeal – for water and sanitation activities, of which £2m earmarked for Indonesia.

• £2.25m: UNICEF’s appeal for Sri Lanka and Indonesia – for child protection activities.

• £1m: International Organisation of Migration (IOM)’s appeal for Indonesia

• £2.5 m: WFP EMOP, of which £2m earmarked for Indonesia.

• £1m: WFP SO’s ( x2) for regional operations.

• £400,000: UNSECOORD’s regional appeal, of which £300,00 earmarked for Indonesia.

• £600,000: FAO’s Special Fund for Emergency & Relief Activities for regional activities.

• £400,000: UNHCR’s appeal for Sri Lanka and Indonesia.

ICRC/ IFRC

• £2m: IFRC’s regional appeal

• £1.5 m: ICRC’s appeal for Indonesia and Sri Lanka. £1m of which is earmarked to Indonesia.

NGOs:

Programme Funding

• £897,000 for Mentor Initiative, for vector control (malaria & dengue fever) for 580,000 persons for 5 months in Aceh province.

• £327,250 for International Medical Corps ( IMC) for health activities in Indonesia ( health, water, nutrition and psycho-social counselling).

DFID support to Disaster Emergencies Committee ( DEC) flights to Indonesia:

• Oxfam - 3 airlifts: £287,928
• Christian Aid – 3 airlifts: £354,774
• Save the Children Alliance: 1 airlift £223,214
