Eye on Aceh is an
independent research and public information organization based in
Aceh. Originally established in 2003 during the conflict, our aim at
that time was to disseminate information about the situation in Aceh,
and to conduct our own independent research on issues that we
assessed to be of strategic importance in Aceh.
In the past, much of our work was focused on the conflict situation,
but since the tsunami we have also begun to monitor post-tsunami
rehabilitation and reconstruction programmes and funding, as well as
produce analysis on future development plans in Aceh. We aim to
bring an alternative and local (Acehnese) perspective to analysis of
current events in Aceh.
Our web team, researchers and writers are almost all local Acehnese
people who during the conflict often risked their own safety to
bring information from the field. While some of our research
continues to attract threats from various parties who find some of
the focus of our research somewhat ‘challenging’, overall the
security situation is conducive to our work.
We receive funding from a variety of sources, but do not accept
funds from any of the large international financial institutions, or
those whose social and environmental policies are in conflict with
the Eye on Aceh ethic of social, environmental and economic justice
and equality for all.
